About
Akilah Muhammad
A senior at Houston's High School for the Visual & Performing Arts, Akilah strives to guide, inspire, and motivate people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. In the beginning of her 11th grade year, she was selected to be in the “American Leadership Forum” for her school. In addition, in 2005, she was elected to “Who’s Who in America” and inducted into “The National Honor Society”. She is a proud co-founder of an organization called “Active Black Council”. She attends Muhammad's Mosque No. 45, which has a large number of youth in its congregation and, in early 2006, she was appointed to serve as a local youth student minister. At a time in which many teens find it difficult to put their spiritual life in the frontline, she is striving to lead by example by being one who will continue to do what she believe is the right thing, redardless of what anyone may say.
With over 40 contestants competing for the winning design, Akilah emerged victorious and had her winning design tailor made for her by the owner of Kameelah's Closet.
Valerie Muhammad, the owner of
Kameelah’s
Closet,
received so many requests for garments for
adolescent girls that she came up with the idea for
the contest. “I think we need modest designs “for
them, by them,” says Mrs. Muhammad. “This is their
opportunity to let us know what they really like.”
“Project Modesty will clothe our girls with the
garments that will reflect their beauty and culture
without being tight, revealing or skimpy. Most
designers for girls are not girls nor do they love
our girls and want to see them respected.”
